June 2017 Newsletter

WOW! Ten months have gone by very, very quickly. As we look at the calendar, we find it hard to believe that the end of the school year is only days away! As the year draws to a close, we are so proud of the many accomplishments of our students and staff.  Our students have learned, laughed and made many memories during the past year.  Have a safe and relaxing summer and enjoy every minute with your family.  We look forward to the fall with all the returning families and wish all the families leaving us the best of luck in the future!

Staffing Changes

Please join us in saying goodbye to the staff members that will be leaving us at the end of the school year:  Mrs. Sturdivant, Mrs. Eybers, Mrs. Perry, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Lombardo, Mrs. Hardt, Mrs. Freybler, Mrs. Gray, Mrs. Machin, Mrs. Willemann, and Ms. Rotruck. We will miss each one of them dearly and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Looking towards the 2017-18 school year, we have some exciting changes within our building!  Mrs. Cochrane and Mrs. Ganow will be moving to fifth grade!  We have hired some wonderful new teachers that will be joining us in the fall and are so excited to be a part of our Alvey community.  We are in the process of hiring two more teachers which will fill additional vacancies for the 2017-18 school year.

Bell Times for 2017-18

Please take note that there is always a possibility that bell times will change for the next school year.  We will post the official times on the website and on Facebook as soon as we know.  Please check back frequently!

Class Lists

Our hope is to have class lists sent out early in August.  Once we feel that our numbers are accurate and we will not need to add or take away a class, the lists will be finalized and mailed.  The latest date they would be mailed is August 16.

End of Year Medication Pick Up

Please pick up all of your student's unused medication by 3pm the last day of school, June 15. If unused medication is not picked up prior to the last day of the current school year, it will be disposed of by school personnel, per PWCS regulation.  Should you have any questions, please contact our school nurse. Thank you for your cooperation.

Kindergarten and New Student Registration

Kindergarten and new student registration is open all summer, Monday-Friday from 8:30am-2:30pm.  Please encourage your friends and neighbors to register as early in the summer as possible so that we have an accurate number of students for the 2017-18 school year.  Students who will be five years of age or older by September 30 are eligible for enrollment in kindergarten. Registration will take place for those students who reside within Alvey Elementary School boundaries.

Kindly bring the following documents with you:

1. The student’s original birth certificate.

2. Three proofs of residence (one must be a copy of the deed, rental or lease agreement, or a notarized Affidavit of Residency attesting to bona fide residency in Prince William County). Other examples of proofs of residency include utility bills, voter registration, driver’s license, etc.

3. A valid immunization record signed by a healthcare professional and a comprehensive physical exam that MUST BE DATED AFTER August 28, 2016. You may bring this information to us any time prior to the start of school.

PTO-

In June, the PTO elections were held for new officers for the 2017-18 school year.  Our new officers are:  Kristin Bredeman- President, Jennifer Cimilluca- Vice President, Hannah Kelly- Secretary, Margarita Rivera- Treasurer, and Krysta Ardigo- Member at Large.  We will be holding a planning meeting on Tuesday, June 20 at 9:00am in the library to plan the events for the 2017-18 school year.  All parents are welcome to attend and provide feedback on events you would like for next year.

Facebook Summer Project

In an effort to keep the Facebook page running and up to date this summer, we are asking for your help!  We are inviting families to take pictures of their travels over the summer with their student(s) that we can share on the Facebook page.  We did this last summer and had fantastic feedback from families.  Pictures can be sent to Mrs. Macerelli with a quick description and they be placed on the Facebook page so all can see where our Sunrays traveled this summer!  Please send pictures to:  maceral@pwcs.edu  This project will run from June 19-August 18.
