Do school counselors work with all Alvey students?

Yes, school counselors are part of the general education program at Alvey. Therefore, they regularly have contact with all Alvey students. It is important to remember that school counseling services are not considered special education, nor are they considered therapy.

School counselors teach each class about 15 lessons per year during specials. These lessons cover topics in academic skills (work habits, organization, time management), social-emotional skills (friendship, conflict resolution), and college/career readiness, and are designed according to PWCS, Virginia, and American School Counselor Association standards.

School counselors offer the option of topical small groups to all students. Parents/guardians provide written/emailed permission if they wish their children to participate in small groups. A small group permission form is sent to all families at the beginning of the school year, and updates are sent at a later time.

School counselors may meet with an individual student if a student, teacher, or a parent/guardian requests a session. School counselors usually only have occasional individual sessions with students. If 3-6 regular individual sessions are needed on the same topic, school counselors may seek permission from a parent/guardian for continued meetings. If a student needs more than 6 individual sessions, school counselors will work to connect a family to outside resources.

What are the ethical standards of school counselors?

A.2.b “The professional school counselor keeps information confidential unless disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others or when legal requirements demand that confidential information be revealed. Counselors will consult with appropriate professionals when in doubt as to the validity of an exception.” ~Ethical Standards for School Counselors, American School Counselor Association

What does it mean that Alvey Elementary has RAMP certification?

The RAMP certification process is a rigorous one. It involves school counselors, along with the support of school stakeholders, using data to set SMART goals/action plans and collect/analyze data on those goals. School counselors submit 12-13 components, each with a narrative and supplementary materials. Submissions are reviewed by a panel of highly qualified ASCA reviewers.

"The RAMP designation, awarded for aligning with the criteria in the ASCA National Model, recognizes schools that are committed to delivering a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program and an exemplary educational environment." ~ASCA 2016-2017 RAMP Press Release

Currently, less than 1% of public and private K-12 schools in the United States hold a RAMP designation for their school counseling programs.
