March 12
Please have your child work on mastering all of their basic addition and subtraction facts through 12. This can be done with flash cards, online games or just spot checking. We will start having timed tests after Spring Break.
-
Please DO NOT teach your child the standard algorithm (adding/subtracting single umbers down columns) for adding or subtracting multi-digit numbers yet. Many students will learn this method, but hen have NO idea of the value of the numbers. Your child will learn that method, after he/she can show an understanding of the values of all of the numbers involved.
2nd graders are still just grasping the concept of place value, and so I we teach multi-digit math using place value to reinforce their understanding.

It's the Most wonderful time of the year!! What a fun time to be with 2nd graders all day, they are so full the excitement and wonder of the season!
We have been reading holiday stories and then finding the story elements. We are also trying to remember that giving is rewarding and that we can "give" in ways that don't include material items. We are working on "giving"; help, forgiveness, joy, patience, ideas, attention and time,
Reminders:
- American Indian test December 15th.
Our Winter Holiday celebration is next Wednesday, December 20th.

We have been reviewing short vowels, learning about closed syllables and making our writing more exciting. In Math we are learning about plane shapes and in Science we have learned how to use some weather tools, and we are learning evaporation, condensation and precipitation by studying the water cycle.
Here is cool song that we learned!

Back to School Night is Tuesday, Sept. 26th from 7-8. We will meet in Room 110 for a short while before touring our classroom.
This week:
In Reading we learned about visualizing while we read. Then we read Henry & Mudge Under a Yellow Moon. We figured out character traits for both of the characters.
In Writing we wrote complete sentences and learned how to put sentences together to make a paragraph. We also learned about pronouns and how they make writing easier.
In Math we practiced our Doubles and Doubles plus/minus 1. Then we learned how to play 2 games that help us practice our Doubles plus /minus 1 strategy. On Friday, we counted coins!
In Social Studies we started our Communities unit. We have talked about different kinds of communities (urban, rural, suburban) and we are working in groups to make our own 3-D communities!
